My mom came to visit in April. It was so much fun. It is the first time my mom was able to spend so much time with Ruby. Ruby loved it. Now I often hear Ruby pretending to talk to Nana on her phone. Below are some of the adventures we had with her.

Temple Square

One of our favorite places to go in Salt Lake is Temple Square. There is plenty to see and eat. Just walking around temple square is amazing. I wish I could hire the grounds keepers to come and make a masterpiece on my future "grounds". We loved just walking around and enjoying all the beauty. We also loved ending each visit with an awesome cinnamon roll from the Nauvoo Cafe in the Joseph Smith Building. Ruby found a treasure at the Church history museum we went to as often as we could. There is a kids section that has so many toys, Ruby loves.

March 17

I have never done much for St. Patricks day in the past. This year i tried making it exciting for Ruby. I think she enjoyed it. She at least enjoyed the candy. Ruby woke up to leprechaun tracks. They lead her to a pot of gold or what she thought was gold. I took some change from her piggy bank and put in a green pot with some chocolate goodies.

The week before Easter Ruby was sick so we had to do our own private egg hunt. Ruby that it was the coolest thing ever.

Adventures with B. Bear

I am making a book of Ruby and her best friend B. Bear.

Ruby does everything with B. Bear.

Who needs toys when you have the kitchen tupperwear.

They love trying on Dad's Shoes. They still have room to grow.

Ruby is great at taking B. Bear for a ride. It is hard work, but Ruby is prepared with her sippy cup in mouth.

A day never goes by without dancing time. B. Bear is a great partner.

B. Bear loves pretzels and Ruby is willing to share.

Sometimes B. Bear needs a change of cloths. Going a few days or weeks in the same cloths can get pretty stinky.

As long as they have each other naptime and bedtime are easy.

Nana's Noodles

My fabulous mother decided she wanted a way to keep in touch with her grandkids, so she introduced us to Nana's Noodles. She sends fun educational activities to all of the kids. Then through phone calls, blogs and letters she talks to them about it. Below is the first of hopefully many of Nana's Noodles.

This is the Yummy meal we made with the homemade dragon in the back ground. We had egg rolls, orange chicken, and fried rice.

Ruby is making fireworks with glue and glitter. Two great crafts for a 17 month old. She loved it.

Christmas in Denver and More

We spent Christmas in Denver at my sister's. My parents and brother, Joseph, were there as well. We had so much fun. On Christmas Eve we went to a rec center with an amazing swimming pool. We also did the traditional eat Pasole, look at lights, and act out the nativity. Christmas morning was great, but I do miss being the kid and not the Santa.

Ruby really enjoyed all of her presents. We constantly had to force her to open a new present. She would have been happy with just one.

This is a pastry that is in the shape of a peach. Amazing. Well, at least I thought so when I saw it. It looks better than it tasted. I bought it from this resturant that had a wall of pastries. I got another pastry that turned out yummy.

Yellowstone National Park

Matt recently accepted an offer with a new medical equipment company. He started at the begining of October. Before he left the old companywe took advantage of vacation time, so we decided to take a trip up to Yellowstone National Park. We loved it. It was a great time to go because it was not crowded and the weather was nice (sweaters at night and shorts and T-shirt during the day). Ruby especially enjoyed the water and rocks (big and little).

Ruby was pretty excited about all of these rocks.

Dinosaur Museum

We recently went to the dinosaur museum when some friends and my dad. The kids seemed to all enjoy it. Ruby's favorite parts seemed to be the areas she could climb on. We had a lot of fun with Liz and Joe and there two kids, Alyssa and Brooklyn, and my dad. Having my dad there reminded me why I grew up thinking museums were boring. He likes reading EVERYTHING. I lost him a couple of times because he was so far behind us. I love ya Dad.

Ruby had a great Birthday! She got a lot of books from her parents, Nana and Papa and Aunt Janny. She loves them. She also got some cloths and toys. Ruby was great at opening everything up. She also had a lot of visitors. My parents, Joe, Jerusha, Steven and there boys came down. the really came down for a BYU football game but they all arrived on her birthday. i will post pictures of the game later.

The hike to timpanogos was fun but long. We hiked with some friends before they moved off to Cal. They view at the top was awesome, but this is the third time I have hiked it and it seems to get longer and longer. It was worth it and we did have fun with Todd and Haley.

Grigg Family Reunion

The Grigg family reunion was at my parents this year. It was one week with 27 people in a small house. We loved it. There was a lot to do and the best part was there were enough kids to keep them all busy so the adults got to have some fun as well. Here are some pictures of my crazy family. Harmons Best Dam Bike Ride

Our trip to Logan Utah was great. We went up Friday night, looked around the sweet campus. I love red brick and most of their buildings were all red brick. I think I get that from my mom. Mom you would have loved the campus. After that we had the traditional night before the race dinner at Olive Garden. This is a tradition for the Steve Hortin Family and those that are with them. Yum!!! Ruby loved the bread sticks. After dinner we took ruby for her first swimming experience (besides the bathtub). She liked it about a 10th of the time. it was freezing. We picked a bad pool to swim in for her frist. We did manage to get some pictures of her smiling.

Luckily I think she was enjoying the cold water at this moment.

The next morning Matt drove me over to meet the other bikers. We started at 7:15 am. It was perfect weather. The country up by Logan is gorgeous. i loved the ride. There were times that I can only see one person in front of me and one person behind me. I loved it. i did pretty good for my first Century. There were a couple of funny stories from it as well. At about 69 miles my speedametor was reading 100 miles. I was feeling pretty good but was a little confused why i felt we were not even close to the finishline. I asked another biker how many mile we had gone and when they told me 69 miles i about crapped my pants. I still had 31 miles to go. I did make it to the end within 5 1/2 hours, but 1/2 mile or less to the finish line i managed to blow out my tire. Luckily there was a great biker who stopped and helped me fix it. I learned that road Biker are some of the nicest people.

Today Matt, Ruby, and I are headed up to Logan for the weekend. The Harmons Best Dam Bike Ride is tomorrow morning. My goal is to ride 100 miles. I think I can do it. I have been riding in the mornings with Janny, Matt's sister. It has been so much easier on my knees. We are staying at a hotel tonight with a swimming pool so Ruby will get to swim for her first time. I am excited. It will be a nice little vacation before our big one in Socorro in a week. Anyway wish me luck.

Two weeks ago my dad came up to run a half marathon with me. It was a lot of fun. We both finished. I ran a 1:58. I did not beat my record, but this is the first time I ran the whole time. Below is a picture of Ruby and I after the finish. She is enjoying the taste of my medal. (No, I did not win, but I am special because they gave me a participant medal. How sweet.) Hopefully I can get my mom to send me the picture of my dad and I and us finishing the race. I will post them later. As you can tell Ruby is still in her PJs. The race started at 5:30 in the morning. It was cold at the top of the canyon. It even rained on us a couple of times during the race.

Ruby is a walking champ. She took her first steps on May 22, 2010.
She was 8 1/2 months old. On the same day she also took quite a lot of belly flops, face plants, and bum flops. That's my girl.

Joe came to visit on his way home from BYU-Idaho. While Matt was at work we went to Wheeler Farm to check out some farm animals. Ruby enjoyed hanging out with her Uncle Joe and chasing roosters, but she really liked tasting the fence. YUMMY!

In April we were able to start taking Ruby out. She was completely cleared by the doctor. One of the first things we exposed her to was of coarse BYU football. They were having their spring game/ practice. There were some injured line men so they did not have the usual blue and white game, but we still got to see the QBs.

6 Months

Ruby is 6 months old and she is growing fast. I hope I will be able to keep up with her. The last 6 months have been great. She is one perky little girl. She has gone from being really sick to the healthiest baby or in the words of her doctor, a "Rock Star." We are currently having to baby proof everything, but it definitely helps me keep the house clean. When she was 2 months she slept thought the night, but now that she is 6 months she does not sleep though the night, but I guess I can't have everything.

Christmas came a little fast this year because of moving. Matt was offered a job where he was interning and we moved up to the Salt Lake area a week before Christmas. We love the apartment we moved into. It is in a nice area. I am still getting use to driving in the big city. It is a little different then the small town I grew up in. Ruby is only 4 months old but very advanced. (Just kidding, this picture was taken in a split second.) Matt was holding her and pulled his hands away for one second before she fell and he reached back in to catch her. Made for a good picture though.

No More Oxygen

We are so blessed to have Ruby in our lives. She has come a long way. Last week her oxygen levels were normal so during Thanks giving Ruby was able to be at home without the oxygen. We monitored her level a few times a day. She did great everytime. Because she did so great over the weekend she no longer needs it. She still has to have her apnea monitor, but at least we have one less cord to worry about. She is amazing. Here are a few pictures of her cute cheeks without her oxygen.

We are so blessed to have Ruby in our life. She is so much fun. She is growing strong and healthy. She gets rhe nickname Jabber Jaws after her Aunt Jerusha. She is also quite the singer and sucker. She really liked sucking on the dress. There is nothing like a good ball of satin, yum.

Last year for our wedding my brother gave us a set of three hats from Peru. He said that he expects a little one to be wearing the third one by the time he got home. Well it looks like he was right. I think Ruby makes the hat look good.

When I was little my dad use to call me Miss Piggy. I had a cute pig nose and curly hair. The name stuck when I had a friend who was smaller than I was. Our older sisters thought it was fitting to call us Kermit and Miss Piggy. Anyway one day I was in costco with my mom and we saw a small collection of the muppet babies. I loved it, so for Christmas that year my mom got me the set. I think I was a senior in high school. I was way excited, but wasn't sure what I was going to do with them. All these years I have been waiting to share them with my children, so here is Ruby enjoying her time with Miss Piggy.

We had to start putting mittens on her because she hates her oxygen and tends to pull it off.

I know that the picture looks like she is blue but she really is not. This is her new favorite position to fall asleep in. We bouncer until she falls asleep. If we stop and she is just resting her eyes she will let us know.

Ruby Joan Hortin

Ruby Joan Hortin was born on September 2, 2009. She weighed 8 lbs 9 oz. She has spent the last 8 days in the NICU, but will be coming home soon (whenever she learns to eat well).

Ruby was very sick with Meconium Aspiration her first few days of her life. Luckily she is a fighter and a toughy so she is doing much bettter. If you would like more information about Meconium Aspiration you can go to:

The Baby's Due Date

Today I am officially at 40 weeks. Nothing yet. She is still in there kicking and having a party. She will not settle "down". Matt took me on a 5 mile walk last night (It was my choice and I was feeling good). The only think the long walk did for me was make my glutes yell at me all night and this morning. The baby room is ready for her and so are we. I am running out of things to do. I do not have much to keep my mind off of the fact that she is not here yet.

Matt and I did celebrate last night by going out for a burger because he finished his last undergraduate class. Because we do not have a job yet and he feels there are some more classes that can benefit him, he is going to take an econ class and a mechanical engineering graduate class this semester. Luckily heThis will also give him the chacne to keep his BYU job. He is going to continue his internship at BD medical in Sandy until they do not need him anymore. As of right now he will go up there twice a week until the end of September/October?. He will also work at his BYU job 3 times a week. I will be at home being a mom. I plan on coaching again at Provo High. That will start up in November. My baby is going to be the water girl. Well, maybe she would be better off as the mascot. I can dress her up as a bulldog. I plan on starting her young with a backetball. :)

This morning there was some excitement in front of our apartment. While i was taking Matt to work this morning I saw a hotair balloon in the air. When i got home 10 minutes later it had landed in front of the apartments across the street from us. Everyone was out in their PJs taking pictures. It was great excitement.

Cascade Springs

Matt and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary July 26. We went up to Cascade Springs which is up American Fork canyon. I never did take pictures when we were up there a year and a half ago. This is where Matt proposed. In fact it was on the below bridge where it all started. It is beautiful there.

Janny Hortin, Matt's Sister, threw me a great family baby shower. She did an awesome job. There was sooo much food and lots of quilting. This is everyone who came. Matt's mom also helped with bringing the quilting supplies.

Thank you to everyone who came. The gifts were awesome. Our baby girl will love the quilt. Even if there are a few extra long strans of yarn on the back (Janny :).).

This last weekend was a lot of fun. Matt and I went out to Denver to visit my sister and her family, Jerusha, Steven, Matthew, and Jonah. My parents also came up from New Mexico. We all had a blast. We ate great food, had great laughs, went swimming, watched some movies, played some games, watched some fireworks, ate in the rain, and went on some hikes. I am sure I left something out.

We went to Georgetown a small town40 minutes away from Denver. After eating under the rain we went up the mountain to hike around. It was beautiful up there.

Some fabulous ladies from my ward threw me a baby shower. They did an awesome job. We ate fruit-kabobs, cressant sandwiches, ice cream sandwiches, scrapbooking, socializing, and gifts. I was so excited to see everyone that came. There were old roommates, friends, and cuzins there.

Goodbye to Dixon

Well I am done teaching. I enjoyed the last two years, but I am so excited to start a new part of my life. Instead of teaching 200 12-14 year-old girls in a day, I will be teaching one cute newborn. Bring it on I am ready. The teachers at Dixon Middle School were awesome to work with. It was amazing the efforts they put into teaching. I loved working with them. They taught me so much. The last week of school we got the privilege of taking the students up to Lagoon (an amusement park North of Salt Lake City). It was great because we did not have to supervise. I was obviously pregnant so the only ride I got to go on was the Sky Lift. I did get to participate in this great photograph with the rest of the CRAZY teachers at Dixon.

The Trip

Life is great in Utah. It is definitely hard going to school every day with this extra weight, but i love the challenge. I am getting bigger and bigger every day and eating like a pig. Two weeks ago Matt and I went down to St. George and Las Vegas. Cammi, my cuz, got married. The wedding was great and we got to see a lot of family. Mom and Lori even came up from New Mexico. Every thing went well. Aunt Daina did an amazing job decorating. I did not get any pictures of the reception but I got a couple at the Temple. Cammi and Adam looked great.

Matt and I also drove down to Las Vegas. We were going to go take a tour of the power plant at Hoover Dam, but we did not get that far. We spent most of the time working the slot machines. It took all my money. Well, actually there is no way you can get me to spend a dime on gambaling. I learned my lesson when I was little. Jerusha might remember this one. I spent $5 on one of the stuffed animal machines (the grabber ones) and never got a stuffed animal. That was all my money. Luckily the guy next to me was amazing at it and felt sorry for me, so he gave me the stuffed animal he knew his kids wouldn't care for. Besides getting a good work out we saw the Gardens and the Fountains at the Balagio. It was my first time seeing them both. they were amazing. I have some pictures and videos I took while we were there. Enjoy!

Well it has been a while since I have posted to my blog so I guess I should update anyone who is still visiting. It has been a hard 2 months. Leaving at 7:00 am every morning and getting home at 7:00 pm every night was tiring. I was coaching basketball for Provo High School. I loved it and learned a lot, but i am glad it is over. My team was so much fun to coach. The girl's had great attitudes. They were always positive even after a loss. We did lose every game but the last one. I am so glad that we won the last game. The girls deserved it. They even played well. It was good to see how much they improved through out the season. Now that basketball is over it has been nice to beable to come home earlier to make dinner for Matt. He has been so great to me. I am finally feeling better. I am not sure why they called it morning sickness because I had it all day. Well it is 5 more weeks before we get to find out what we are having. Matt and I are both excited.

This Christmas season has been great. Two weeks ago we went to Temple Square to look at the lights. It was amazing. They do such a great job. Here are some pictures we took. It is a lot better in person.

The Trip to Moab

The trip to Moab was a lot of fun, but too short. Some day I am going to have to go specifically for the sites and hike around. Matt and I only hiked for about 1 hour after my race.

In the car on the ride down. Matt and Myself and Becca and Kent. Kent got 15th over all in the race and 6th in his catagory. He is an all-star runner.

I think I am going to bring the high socks back into style. What do you think?

I'm Back

I know it has been a while and I admit I am not very good at keeping everyone up to date. My biggest news is that I am training for the Moab half marathon, so I spend most of my free time running and doing intramurals. This will be the longest i have ever ran. The race is on March 8. For intramurals this year I am involved in basketball and innertube water polo. It should be lots of fun. I also recently volunteered to be a coach of a girls athletic team but I cannot say what that is yet. You'll have to guess.

Trip to Las Vegas

Becca, myself, and Bryan at the Las Vegas BYU game. We had great seats except for the back side of the big guy below that we constantly had to see. GO COUGARS!!!

Here he is. If you look closely yoy can see him surrounded by BYU fans. At one point of the game he game his megaphone to the BYU dan on his right to sing the fight song. As long as the fans were drunk they were nice.

This is the group we got tickets with. we had a good size. if you look at my right arm it has a brace on it. that is another story of its own. I will just say two things. I don't eat fruit snacks anymore and the ER has a new good story to put in their records. It is interesting teaching with no thumb to use on my right hand.

Yes, Jerusha, it is true we found Pooh Corner. It really exists.

We got to stop by the Las Vegas Temple. It looks a lot like the Portland temple. It even has an atrium inside.

I also spent a some time in St. George with Grandma. she is great. We went to the Temple together, took a walk, watched a movie and played card games and went to bed and 12:00 at night. who else can say they have stayed up that late having a party with their Grandma.

The week before I came home I was technically homeless because I was kicked out of our apartment. I lived in my car and slept outside. These were two of the nights. The mattresses were leftovers from random apartments and the hammocks were walmart specials. I actually did not mind being homeless. I do have to admit we were "homeless with style".

I finally got the fabulous oppurtunity to wear the moomoo -I mean I graduated. These are some pictures of my graduation.

Dr. Zanandria was a professor of mine. She was also one of my advisors.

Trustino Anderson was in my ward for the last 3 years and was a great basketball teammate.

Becky was in my core for the PETE program. We spent a year and a half together in all of the same classes.

Stacey and Christen were two other girls in the PETE program. All 24 of us got to know each other pretty well.

They make me frustrated sometimes because they are not very serious, but for the same reason they make me laugh all of the time. I have learned a lot. Last weekend I (Grandma [who] got ran over by a reindeer) was part of some detective work. Santa Claus was missing. In fact, a body was found that matched Santa Clause's profile. I was accused of the accident because of my motive and weapon. I had recently gone in busy with Gingy who ran away from the Muffin Man. We had our own famous cookie business. They were the best cookies in the house. No one but Santa knew that we had stolen the recipe from the Muffin Man. He threatened to turn us in unless we paid him with $1200 and a special cookie every Thursday.

Well the story goes on and after hours of investigation, we all concluded that Santa was an imposter. Buddy the elf was impersonating Santa. The impersonated Santa was acting a little strange and no one knew why. The conductor had enough after Santa fired him and got the most of Santa or whom he thought was Santa. Who founf the conductors and have him locked up in jail for life.

Just so everyone is clear, Santa is still alive and kicking, but Buddy the elf is another story. Christmas is finally back to normal for every one, even “grandma [who] got ran over by a reindeer.” Gingy and I have gotten things worked out with the Muffin Manso there are no more hard feeling their.

This was a Christmas murder mystery game I was involved in last week. I enjoyed it. I even got the prize for the person best in character. I guess I am a natural grandma.

Growing up I have always been told I look like Hayley Mills. For those that do not know who this is, she is an actress who played the twins in Parent Trap, Pollyanna, and etc.. For this very reason I have always wanted to dress up like her for Halloween. Well, this year it happened and believe me there was not much, time, money, or effort put into this costume. I am currently a student at Brigham Young University. I am seeking a degree in Exercise Science with an emphasis in Physical Education Teaching and Coaching. On November 6th I begin my coaching Internship with Lehi Junior High in Utah. I will be the assistant coach to the girls nineth grade basketball team. In January I will begin my student teaching at "?????". I actually will not know for another month or two, but I am really excited.

Besides school (which includes playing sports and teaching sports) I spend most of my time with church and work. At work I have the privilage of associating with a very smart and science bound population or who we like to call, "the physic's nerds." The picture above was taken at the physics and astronomy alumni dinner during BYU homecoming. I was hard at work serving chicken.
